3 Groovy Pigs HD is an interactive storybook app that re-imagines the classic story of “The Three Little Pigs”. In this story, the three pigs are musicians who play very well together but because of selfish reasons, two of the pigs decide to go out on their own and live in houses made of straw and sticks. When the Big Bad Wolf blows down their houses and chases them, they are reunited back again.

This version of the story is more whimsical and the ending is less morbid and more kid-friendly. This story is presented in the usual interactive storybook format – full page illustrations with animation with story text and the option for a narrator to read the story. Every page also contains interactive elements that unlocks hidden sound effects or animation or are fun activities that children need to do like help a pig pack up his drum set or blow into the microphone to help the Big Bad Wolf blow down the house.

When your children are done with the story, there are other activities that can still be done. There is a “Sticker Book” section where children can create their own environments by choosing from the huge collection of stickers. Users are also given controls to flip, rotate, and resize the different stickers so they can really flex their creative muscles.

There is a “Coloring Book” section where kids can choose from a selection of black and white line art drawings that they can color using the palette of colors given them. Tapping the color and tapping a section of the line art fills that section in right away so coloring is quick and fun.

Finally, there is a “Puzzle Game” where users can select a specific picture and select the level of difficulty. The level of difficulty is determined by an increasing amount of tiles that the picture is segmented into. When you press play, the timer starts and you can solve the puzzle and record your best time as well.

I like this version of the story where the creator introduced creativity and personalities to the pigs by making them musicians. It teaches about unity and the importance of working together as a team and most importantly, accepting new individuals into your group. I am sure that parents will appreciate the fact that this is less dark than the original story.

The storybook app is well executed. The full page illustrations are well drawn and animated. The narrator’s voice and enunciation is clear and understandable. The option to turn this narrator on or off is a good option to have. The music and sound effects all enhance the experience of reading through the story.

The range of interactive elements within the story is well thought out. Some elements are simpler, unlocking animation and sound effects while some are activities that really make use of the device. These different interactive elements will really make this particular app stand out among the users. Plus, when the children are done with the story, they still have a lot more activities to do like coloring, creating environments with stickers, and completing puzzles. The replay value of this app is very high.
