Chalk Walk for the IPAD is an interactive app for toddlers and pre-schoolers that develops their thumb-finger pincer grip skill needed for school. It also teaches other skills like hand-eye coordination, simple motor skills, simple letters and words introduction, and promotes left to right progression. And it does all of these while maintaining fun with the visuals, games, and rewards.

    Details

Chalk Walk is an interactive activity app on the IPAD for toddlers and pre-schoolers to learn certain key motor skills. The idea behind this app is smart and logical. Children used to practice their pincer grip needed to be able to hold a pencil by coloring using crayons. Now, with the advent of more accessible technology more and more children go to school unable to hold a pencil because they spend more screen time rather than drawing or coloring on paper. This app is designed to make use of this screen time to develop this key skill that children need. In order to play this simple tracing game, children need to practice and hold their thumb-finger pincer grip in order to progress. The app has progressive levels with words to unlock. Within each level are different tracing challenges that unlock one letter of the word. Complete all tracing challenges to unlock the word and gain a reward icon.

    What iHeartThisApp Liked

The app really has a single goal in mind which it does well: develop children’s finger-thumb pincer grip. It does this by using the line tracing activity with pincer grip control instead of the usual single finger style. It also develops secondary skills as well. It develops simple hand-eye coordination through the tracing challenges. In a way, it also introduces children to letters and words. The menu’s layout of progressive levels and tracing challenges really exposes children to left to right progression which will be used in the future through reading, writing, etc.

Before every tracing challenge, an icon is shown to remind users about the pincer grip which allows them to jump right into the game without reading the instructions section. Of course, the option for left handed users is a thoughtful detail to include. The drawings, the textured backgrounds, music, video playback of the finished tracing, and reward system all work towards encouraging its users to learn while having fun.
