Color Me Pete is an interactive activity app that teaches children about colors by allowing them to look for colors present in their own environment. The app is an Iphone app that works together with your device’s camera. The narrator asks the user to look for a certain color (ex. “Look for the color red”). The child needs to find an object near him/her using the phone and tap that color. Pete the Pirate Parrot has lost his colors so finding a correct color brings up a black and white line art drawing of Pete which the user can fill in one color at a time. After finishing, the game starts all over again and users can color Pete in a completely different way.

The app contains 10 colors that children can look for in three major languages – English, Spanish, and French. There are options to adjust the level of difficulty for children of different ages. The color bar cues can be turned off for more challenge and the narrator can also be turned off to practice reading skills.

Color Me Pete is a simple app that does its objective well. What better way to teach children about colors than to allow them to look for the colors where they are? It’s an active app that requires children to move around and look for objects with the specific colors. It will not get repetitive because they can play the game whenever they visit a new place and the treasure hunt feel will definitely keep them occupied. I like that the app also encourages creativity by allowing users to color the picture of Pete any way they want to. The app also contains child-safe buttons like the exit button or settings button so they do not accidentally push them.

Suggested Enhancement

The only suggestion that I can make is to add more (maybe a couple) pictures of Pete that children can color. Having more than 1 picture will surely add to the replay value of the app.

Color Me Pete is an interactive activity app that lets children master the identification of basic colors by allowing them to look for these colors in their environment. This is an active game that lets them walk around and look for colors which makes the experience and learning more effective.
