Discovering Colors -- Animals (Coloring Book for kids) is an interactive coloring book app that teaches children about colors as well as letting them practice their creativity through coloring animal-themed pictures.

The game has two game modes and in the normal mode, each picture is presented black and white but with colored dots on each section. On the side of the screen are several colored pencils that children can choose from and match with the colored dots. Once a section is tapped, the chosen color fills that section. The game ends when the child has correctly matched and colored all dotted sections with the appropriate colors. When this happens, the picture comes alive and animates. There are 12 pictures with 4 unlockable pictures to color and learn from.

The app also has a Free Mode where children can be free and color each picture with whatever color they want. As opposed to Normal mode which teaches color matching and how the colors are seen in animals and their environments, this Free mode allows children to be creative and use colors as they wish.

The app’s layout and controls are simple, intuitive, and very kid friendly. Each screen is presented very neatly with the illustration taking main stage.

The mechanic of using colored dots that children can match with the colored pencils is a good way of teaching kids about colors and how animals and their environments reflect these colors. The animation when children finish the coloring correctly is a good bonus to reward them. On the other hand, the free mode allows children to mix and match colors to their hearts’ content without being limited by the matching mechanic. They can also animate what they have done!

These two modes go hand in hand and complement each other well. The app will not be as effective if only one of the modes exist. The normal mode is the more rigid way of teaching children about colors and visual language (grass is green, skies are blue, etc.) The free mode allows children to be as artistic and as creative as they want. This brings up the saying: “You have to know the rules in order to break them”.
