App Review: Fun Science Lab - Teach Children About Basic Science Principles

Fun Science Lab by Zonkey Interactive is an educational app designed to teach children ages 5 to 11 basic science principles. Children will learn about electricity by linking together batteries, wires and light bulbs. Through trial and error they will discover the difference between conductors and insulators. Using liquids they can learn about valves and sound pitch. They can paint toys while learning about combining colors, transport dolls using magnetism, work with pendulums and scales and MORE. In all there are 9 unique mini game “experiments” each with 3 difficulty levels. The 9 mini games are set in a toy factory and each have a distinctive theme including magnets, heat, pitch, gas, etc. Each level asks a question or has tasks to complete within the experiment. When a level is completed a medal is added to the Collection Book. Failed experiments are also rewarded. Objects can be broken if used incorrectly- this adds puzzle pieces to the Book of Destruction.

I appreciate that this app is child friendly with no advertisements, in-app purchases, or private data collection. The navigation is mostly intuitive without any extras cluttering the app. Fun Science Lab encourages trial and error while many of the levels build on experience from previous levels. My seven year old was able to play each level with little assistance. His favorite game involves navigating a hot air balloon around obstacles while learning how hot air is lighter then cold air causing the balloon to rise. He was excited to find the Book of Destruction and replay the levels looking for puzzle pieces.

Suggested Enhancement

I would like to have the option of having verbal instructions to cater to the lower age range of their audience since many early elementary users are not fluent readers yet. I’d also like to see more explanation of scientific terminology. Perhaps after each action there could be a short explanation of the results. Longer levels and more additional levels would extend the play value.

Overall

Fun Science Lab is enjoyable science app that allows children to explore science concepts in a fun and engaging games. It’s a great way to discover a love of science.
