App Review: Guess Moo! - Introduce Toddlers to Animals

Guess Moo is an interactive and educational app for toddlers and kindergarteners to learn about some of the common animals by associating the sound that they make to the picture representation. The app’s main menu presents 12 animals that children can tap to hear the sound that they make (i.e. a cat meows, a dog barks, etc.). When an animal is selected, the app will play the sound that particular animal makes as well as a voice over narration of a short description of that animal’s characteristics written in poem style. The app seeks to allow children to associate the appropriate animals sounds to the particular animal while also giving a short description of the animals for further learning. When the users have learned all the animal sounds, there is a “Quiz” icon where they can actually test how much they have mastered it by matching the appropriate icons to the sounds.

The app is another one of those apps that does only one thing and does it very well. From the design and execution of it, you can really see that it wants to teach and familiarize children with some of the common animals. The main menu already contains all of the animal icons with text for really easy access.

When you choose an animal, the animal sound plays and repeats and can be repeated as often as a user wants by tapping the button with the onomatopoeic word. Upbeat music can also be heard along with the animal sound and narration but there is an option to turn it off to avoid distraction.

The window also contains text of a short description of the animal’s more common characteristics which will enrich children’s knowledge of each animal. It is also written poem-style which adds whimsy and fun to it. Finally, the quiz section is a nice touch to recap and refresh all of the knowledge that the users have gained.

Overall

Guess Moo is definitely a good app for you to introduce your toddlers or kindergarteners to common animals. The app uses sound and visual association as well as voice over and text descriptions of animal characteristics to aide in the process of learning while having fun.
