Letter Muncher – Teaches Kids About Consonant Letters, Phonics, and Vocabulary

Letter Muncher is a great educational app for children to learn about initial consonant sounds, letters, and vocabulary. It integrates fun visuals, clear audio, and a wide range of objects into a simple, fun, and educational game.

    Details

Letter Muncher is an interactive game and learning app that teaches kids about initial consonant letters, phonics, and vocabulary as well. The game focuses on one letter, then gives several objects that start with the letter and some that do not. Tapping the letter plays the voice over that identifies the letter and what it sounds like. Children then have to choose among the objects, and decide which of them start with the letter and which of them don’t. The correct objects will have to be fed to the letter muncher while the ones that aren’t have to be discarded in the recycle bin. Children will be able to discern the difference either through sound (because tapping the objects will make the narrator say the object’s name), or through reading because the objects are labeled. Users will be doing this for all letters until they have mastered them.

The app also gives parents some control over their child’s learning with several tweakable options. They can choose which letters to include, whether to present the letters in order one after the other or randomly. They can also choose to turn off the labels of the objects so children can focus on learning the sounds, or they can turn off the sounds so they can focus on the visuals and reading. There is also the option of creating multiple profiles with their own settings. This control over what your children is learning or tweaking the learning to fit your child’s level will appeal to most parents. There is also the option of tracking statistics but parents will have to register first.

    What iHeartThisApp Liked

The app is focused and effective with what it wants to teach children. The controls and layout are simple enough that users will be focused on learning and not figuring out the controls. The art and colors are cute and apt for the target users. The voice over narrator’s voice is clear and friendly which will make it appealing to the young users. The app promotes learning through both phonics and reading (which can be isolated from each other) and that makes this app a really good educational app. Finally, the control it allows parents with regards to settings and tweaking it for their child’s level is a really big plus.

    Suggested Enhancement

The only thing that I can suggest is for developers to integrate the statistic tracking feature into the app because the current requirement of registering first is not something all parents would be happy to do.

    Overall

Letter Muncher is a great educational app for children to learn about initial consonant sounds, letters, and vocabulary. It integrates fun visuals, clear audio, and a wide range of objects into a simple, fun, and educational game.
