Super Why ABC Adventures is based on the PBS kids show Super Why. Kids learn letter names, letter sounds, alphabet order and words with help from the characters of the show. There are five different games to play and learn. Stickers are earned for correct answers which are used to decorate pictures of different locales in the Map of the World. Also, there are four ABC sing-along videos. This app is appropriate for young children just beginning to learn the alphabet and those needing practice.
Z Marks the Spot – Super Why
Learn alphabet letter order. Kids connect the letter dots by following the order of the letters in the alphabet. Super Why offers a hint or the next letter dot blinks, if the player needs help. Upon completion a picture of a treasure is revealed.
Lickety Letter Safari – Alpha Pig
Learn to identify all the letters of the alphabet. The letter name is spoken and kids need to pick the correct letter from a group of five. If the child picks the wrong letter it is removed as a choice. When the correct letter is chosen the child will hear the letter sound and is then shown an animal or object that begins with the letter. Progress on the letter names is tracked and can be accessed in the information section.
Under the Sea Sounds – Princess Presto
Learn letter sounds. The letter sound is spoken and kids need to search for the corresponding letter which is used to spell a word. Progress on the letter sounds is tracked and can be accessed in the information section.
Golden Letter Bones – Woofster
Practice tracing letters by following a path marked by shiny golden bones. If the trace is incorrect, the path will be shown again.
Let’s Letter Fly – Wonder Red
Practice identifying pictures that start with a certain letter sound. Kids can search through the given pictures by turning a steering wheel, using the arrows or tilting the iPad. The younger kids found it easiest to use the steering wheel.
What Elena Liked
The graphics were colorful and the characters are a bonus for fans of the show. The characters give instructions on how to play each game, but the controls are fairly easy. I liked that the app covered all the basics; letter names, letter sounds, alphabet order and tracing letters. The kids liked the characters and decorating the eight different backgrounds in the Map of the World section.
It would be nice if each game had an option to play again rather than just exiting to the main menu.
In the Info – Legal section, it states that the app collects anonymous aggregated analytic data. I would prefer that no data was being collected.
SUPER WHY ABC Adventures: Alphabet for iPad is a nice educational app for kids to learn the basics of the alphabet.
