The Lion and the Mouse is an interactive story and activity book app for the Ipad 2 that retells the classic fable with a mixture of modern illustrations and animations. Pages of the story are shown full screen with the story text on the bottom read by a narrator. Most of the story pages contain interactive elements that, when tapped, unlock crisp 2d animation which will make children feel like they are watching cartoons. Aside from animation, there also are mini games to be played with within the story. The app contains 33 animated scenes, 30 different interactions, and several mini games for your children’s enjoyment.

There are different reading modes to choose from: Read to Me, Read By Myself, and Bedtime Story. The first two are pretty straightforward – one is ready by a narrator and one without, respectively. The last one is new mode wherein the audio of the story is played normally but the only visual you see is a simple animation of a night sky. This app is available in 5 different major languages so more children will be able to experience this story of keeping promises and unlikely friendship.

The app’s layout is very straightforward. The illustrations and animations are full screen while the text is presented neatly on the bottom part of the screen. A small logo of the developer reveals a hidden sidebar where options like the Home button, Table of Contents, Music, and Narration are found.

The illustrations are beautiful and colorful and look like digital paintings. The animation is crisp and entertaining which will surely capture children’s attentions. The narration, music, and sound effects all support the story and visuals very well.

The option to turn the narration on and off is always good to have but the Bedtime Story is a nice touch. In this reading mode, the app plays the audio of the story but does not show the visuals. This way, children can listen to the story with the lights and their eyes closed until they fall asleep. Parents will like this mode because without the visuals to excite and stimulate their children, the story becomes a very good tool to help them fall asleep.
